I am with Tina, don't get it and it might be because I am NOT a photographer (unfortunately ;-) and my photos are simply there so drive traffic, create backlinks and establish keywords ...simply SEO work. My pins are linked to the original website - don't you want the traffic?
In my mind I am not photocopying a song or a book but an excerpt/sample (like itunes does it) and post it so that I and others can go to the source and look for the complete item. I do understand that this is a different issue with photography...I am a blog pinner pretty much. Harmless and probably a little naive too.
I was looking for your watermarks you spoke off but couldn't find any so I didn't pin - scared to now. Have a great day!

Good Morning-I am a little late to the party (not unusual for me, heehee). I recently decided to try to start a photography business and was digging arounf the web for a toehold on what type of liability I might have (who could sue me and why) and ran across your blog post. I love the fact that you write in converstional format. Since you have a background in law, you could have easily slipped into *yawn* "legalese". I know this is not the be all and end all definitive copyright blog-but it has given me pause to think around the subject. ALL law has become so blurry that a layperson is fearful to even step from their home. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I feel like we were sitting over a cup of coffee discussing the pros and cons of pinning. Thanks - if you were in Ohio I would invite you to have an actual cup :)

Whew. Legal stuff is scary and a bit hard to follow through :) Good thing I only have 3 pins on my Pinterest; all mine. Okay, so this tricky. I'm prohibited to use copyrighted materials but I can do so provided it's under 'fair use'.... sigh! Let's leave the discussion to the lawyers. As for now, I prefer posting my own work. So what can we learn? Never use someone else work for your own self-interest.

The general rule to building websites and managing ux (user experience) has been to build for the lowest common denominator. Unfortunately in this modern age, not everyone is tech savvy in fact the majority use a particular browser that is the furthest behind in technical application and web standards (meaning developers have to custom write code for websites just to make them look ok in ie where 5 other browsers just naturally work). Where am I going with that? Pinterest should think of the user.. People are smart but outside of their comfort zones or knowledge base we all generally follow the pack like sheep. It's part of cognitive thinking. So while I love inspiration boards and genuinely find them educational, I also wish pinterest shared the real laws a little more openly so that we all don't have to explain them to clients who justify reuse as the waterfall effect. Also kind of wish it was easier to give credit. Like if you add something from a site have a link auto added and permanently stuck with the pin. Make punning in general faster and more intuitive. I've found some really cool exercise videos from pinterest and the best part was getting to the link back to the original site. Many of the blogs I'm now hooked on come from there. MOral of the story? Always make it easy for a user to get from point a to point b to do what you want and if you don't know how.. Find a ux designer or architect.

very well said. I have teens as well and my poopy dog I had to give to my parents for other reasons. The dog I miss snoring at the foot of my bed. The kids I fantasize (lovingly) about flying the coop soon! Maybe if we all forgave the poop in many areas of life it would be a sweeter existence. Thanks for the reminder
